October 30, 2009: What a day!

Friday was a day full of science exploration and Halloween fun!

In the morning we were treated to an in-school OMSI presentation called, "Let's Rock!" There was a short discussion period in which the instructor discussed the different kinds of rocks with the children. They know their rocks: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. The next 40 minutes were for hands-on exploration. Students tested rocks to see which would float. They looked at rocks that glow using a black light. They also were given the opportunity to make their own model of a sedimentary rock. It was a very fun experience for everyone as their explored different rocks and minerals.

Scarlett, Adrian, and Dustin look through microscopes at pieces of sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks.

In the afternoon we celebrated Halloween. First there was the annual all-school costume parade. Following the parade, we had a fun party prepared by some very dedicated parents. The class enjoyed bubbling apple juice, veggies, and tasty breads. After the food, the created ghost hands via a chemical reaction--baking soda and vinegar.
It was a hit! We had a great day!
